Le cose seguono il loro corso

Il 26 dicembre As you know, we made a trip back to the States to visit and see our new grandson Barrett. We were apprehensive about leaving during the construction of the house. We discussed what would occur while we were gone and tried to express our concerns and desires. At one point we had a discussion about where we wanted a chimney for the stove in the kitchen. Claver talked me out of my idea and offered his own. After thinking about it, his idea seemed better than mine. The first thing we noticed as we approached the house upon our return was that the kitchen chimney was placed where I had initially wanted it. It's OK there, but was a surprise.

We did not know what to expect as we entered the house. During our absence they managed to tile the entire bottom floor. They also plastered most of the inside walls. The inside has made a remarkable transformation from the gutted old dark and dreary shell it once was. It was too much to take in all at once, and we weren't sure about how we felt about it all. It took a couple visits to feel comfortable with the change.

As you can see, our house is going to be a contrast between very old and modern. Some aspects, such as the downstairs hallway with it's jagged rock wall on one side and modern block and plaster on the other can only be described as "unique" or as they say here,"particulare".

The tile is ceramic that is made to look like terra cotta. Each room upstairs has a different pattern made of the same tile. Downstairs the rooms have the same pattern but rotated 90 degrees one room from the other. Even the garage floor is tiled.

The inside stairs will be covered with the same material as our windowsills. This, because Claver decided it would look nicer than my idea of terra cotta.

One day we went up and discovered that most of the windows were installed, sometimes I think the work is being done by elves, or by magic. The shutters have been delivered.

Anyway the work is coming along, we didn't get in before Christmas, but we are pleased with the work. We have a lot to do before move in day. There is the septic system and we will have to arrange for an underground liquid gas (propane, sort of) tank. We will have to figure a way to get telephone service up to our area, etc. etc. What an adventure!!

Sz and Larry, it is so much fun to follow this adventure. Your photos are telling the story so well. I hope that someday we will be able to see it all in person.

BTW: The next time you are coming to the states, let us know and we'll wend our way to Escondido.
